Description

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks on the Catalyst 6500 (BCMSN-6500) v3.0 is recommended training for individuals seeking certification as Cisco CCNP as well as those students which will be immediately utilizing the Catalyst 6500 within their networks. This course enables learners to use appropriate technologies to build scalable multilayer switched networks, to create and deploy a global intranet, and to implement basic troubleshooting techniques in environments that use Cisco multilayer switches for client hosts and services. This course also enables learners to improve traffic flow, reliability, redundancy, and performance for LAN switching that is self-supported or transported via a service provider. The purpose of this course is to enable a learner to achieve a mid-career professional-level competency and provide hands-on experience with the Cisco Catalyst 6500 platform.

Note: All laboratory exercises are carried out on the Catalyst 6500 platform.

Objectives

After completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Use the Campus Infrastructure module of the Enterprise Composite Network Model to deploy an efficient and expandable enterprise network
  • Identify Catalyst 6500 chassis and components
  • Manage the Catalyst 6500 bootup for software migrations, upgrades and password recovery
  • Define VLANs to segment network traffic and manage network utilization
  • Implement STP to accelerate network traffic convergence in Layer 2
  • Troubleshoot spanning tree, and identify enhancements provided by RSTP and MST
  • Implement multilayer switching to enable higher data throughput between isolated VLANs
  • Implement redundancy in the routing layer to improve and ensure end-to-end availability of network services
  • Implement hardware redundancy features such as redundant Supervisors
  • Secure switches in the Campus Infrastructure module against data theft and service loss in the event of network compromise
  • Configure the campus switches to optimize traffic flow when voice, video, and data applications traverse a single converged network, including Airspace WLAN (Wireless) connectivity

Prerequisites

To fully benefit from this course, learners should have the following prerequisite skills and knowledge:

  • Basic router configuration
  • Basic switch configuration
  • Basic virtual local area network (VLAN) configuration
  • Basic Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) configuration
  • Basic trunking configuration
  • Standard access list configuration

Note: The prerequisite topics are covered in the Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO) v2.1 & Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) v2.3 courses or our CCNA 640-801 Bootcamp V2.3 (CCNA) v2.3. It is recommended that a student achieve Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) status prior to taking this course. Students not seeking certification must still complete the prerequisite courses before enrolling in this course.
